Tiger's Eye Galaxy in the Bear (all night)
The Tiger's Eye Galaxy NGC 2841 is a lovely, inclined spiral galaxy in Ursa Major that appears as a uniform, 6 by 3 arc-minutes oval halo surrounding a relatively bright core. The galaxy shines at magnitude 9.1, placing it within reach of medium-aperture telescopes. Its tightly curled arms resemble an elliptical galaxy. NGC2841 is located near the elbow of the great bear's front limbs, only 1.75 degrees southwest of the bright star Theta Ursae Majoris. Since Ursa Major rotates during the night, start at Theta and slew your telescope in the direction of the bear's front toe stars Talitha and Talitha Australis. In a larger telescope, look for dimming of the halo on the southeastern edge (towards Theta) due to a dark dust lane.
