• Advent of Code?

So, is anyone doing Advent of Code this year?

I usually think things like that are kind of silly, but
some of the problems have been kind of interesting.

I'd like to give it a shot.. a few years ago I did a whole bunch of Code Golf in COBOL and would be fun to play around with some puzzles like this... it's just that December is always so hectic and flys by so fast that it's hard to find time.

Thanks for the reminder though. I'm going to try and at least get a few days done this year. :)

For me, no. Just no time this year.

But Advent of Code is a good excuse to learn something new, or practice something old.

One year, I did all the challenges in GWBASIC on my IBM-XT clone. I was actually able to get pretty far before hitting the limits of GWBASIC.

I still have it on my list to do it in FORTRAN-80 on my Kaypro 4. But time....

I looked at it, and it seems interesting, but I think it involves more of a time commitment than I want.

But it does seem kind of cute, as they wind up being extended word problems, with a continuing storyline, and it seems like a fun idea.

    Hello tenser!

So, is anyone doing Advent of Code this year?

Never heard of it. Just reading some of the samples from the
archives reminds me of the math problems in grades 11, 12, and
    13.

They can be a good mind exercise. Nothing wrong with that.

    Presentation/website is nicely done.

Yeah, I hear that. I occasionally glance at some of the
problems, but I don't think most of them are that interesting.
If one seems cool, I'll have a look; mostly I've been prodded
by people asking questions about specific challenges in
    other places. :-D

I do think that programmers as a whole need to start doing
etudes, which would be larger programming challenges, rather
than smaller problems (the agile charlatans like to advocate
"katas" which, I think, is entirely the wrong thing).

We all get our inspiration from different sources. For me, the hardest part of starting is deciding "what do I want to do?" and it has to be interesting enough to want to dedicate the time/effort.

Things like Advent of Code strive to help people do that.
