• Birthday weekend

From poindexter FORTRAN@21:4/122 to All on Monday, November 10, 2025 07:56:06
It's my birthday, my family and I took a trip to Napa, California's
first big wine region. Did some shopping, stayed at a great
thai-flavored B&B, had dinner at a wonderful restaurant, an amazing
breakfast on the grounds of the B&B and took the scenic route home.

One problem with being in wine country - I stopped drinking a couple of
months ago. Weird, I started journalling what I'm eating and just
stopped drinking when I started factoring in the calories.

I did some back-of-the-beermat math and figured the calories I'd drunk
in my adult life equalled close to 500 pounds worth of fat.

It was refreshing driving through wine country sober when I know
everyone else on the road's had a few.

Happy birthday! That sounds like a good weekend.

I've never drank alcohol much. Even at my age, I'm still unsure of how much (or little) I could drink and still drive safely, so I always err on the side of caution and don't drink if I'll be driving later.

I stopped drinking a couple years ago but love wine country. I've debated whether or not it would be worthwhile to go back and visit. Your post has
given support to the 'go back' option, thanks!

I'm catching up on messages, but I was entertained by this, as now I'm figuring you're a retired sumo wrestler, able to hold your ground against all comers.

...admittedly, there are likely several things wrong with that image, but it was entertaining, all the same.

It was refreshing driving through wine country sober when I know
everyone else on the road's had a few.

When I lived in the area, I was the designated driver for expeditions like this.

Though I still drank things; just that my idea of drinking is to have enough sips to review the wine, and then have someone else finish off the other 2/3rds of my tasting portion.

It was low enough that I never felt different than if I hadn't been drinking at all. Tastings take a while, and I was probably drinking half a drink an hour, at the most.

That said, I'm enjoying my annual wine advent calendar. I don't know if any of the wine is "great", or would be if I got a full bottle and stored them for a while, but it's fun to review, rank, and (eventually) put them on my wine wiki.

I guess this is the 4th year I've had a wine calendar. They've all been from Geile Weine, and most of the reason why I ended up with them is that the bottles are 100ml. Most other wine calendars are 250ml.

And I'm probably drinking about 20ml to do the tasting.
