• Is too much natural sugar like fruits bad for you?

"Too much fruit is really bad for you"- is the opinion of Prof Dr Robert Lustig. He
explained that fruits contain a lot of this particular type of sugar called fructose.

This sugar is preferentially metabolized in our liver. So, unlike glucose that can be used
by various tissues throughout the body, fructose can only be used in the liver.

Also, glucose can be stored in our liver and muscle as glycogen, a stored form of
glucose; but fructose cannot be stored and that means, fructose needs to be converted
    to fat immediately.

So, extra work for the liver and on top, liver gets full with fat. Some argue that this is
the first step towards developing metabolic syndrome and diabetes etc.

Fructose appears to be the primary reason for Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
in children and adolescents. In one experiment, prof Lustig replaced fructose consumption among NAFLD suffering adolescents with glucose.

So, fructose consumption was brought down from 12% of total energy to 4% and they
were given extra glucose to make up for the total calorie. Just after 9 days, their liver
lost 30% fat and they were performing much better metabolically.

Amazing! In fact, that is a good news for NAFLD suffers that they can reverse the
problem very quickly and without any medication!

Prof Lustig also said that fructose causes leaky gut where the tight junction between
adjacent epithelial tissue is loosen, allowing undigested food particles and bad microbes
to get into our blood stream. This results in inflammatory response throughout the body
    and many other issues.

The substances that gets damaged by fructose causing leaky gut, is also present in our
brains. And so, Prof Lustig thought fructose can have an impact on our brain function
    too.

Finally, we have all heard about sugar addiction. This is a scientifically proven
phenomenon where our brain craves sugar. In experiments done in rats, it was found
that sugar addiction is worse than cocaine addiction! Interestingly, glucose does not
trigger this addictive behavior and fructose does.

So, considering these reasons and many others, too much fruit (sweet or not) consumption is bad, really bad.
