Holistic Ways to Treat Hypertension
If you˙ve been told you have high blood pressure, don˙t panic! You have more control
over your health than you think. Your diet and lifestyle play a huge role in managing
hypertension naturally.
I remember one of my patients, a 52-year-old man, who came in frustrated about taking
blood pressure medications. He wanted a more natural approach. We worked together to
adjust his diet, increase his physical activity, and introduce stress management
techniques. Within months, his numbers improved so much that we reduced his medication dosage!
Here˙s what you can do to manage hypertension naturally:
- Eat foods rich in nitric oxide: Beetroot, zobo (hibiscus tea), celery, and cucumber
naturally dilate blood vessels and improve circulation. Add these to your daily meals!
- Reduce salt intake: Excess sodium causes your body to hold onto more fluid, increasing blood pressure. Choose fresh, whole foods over processed ones.
- Stay active: Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise (walking, cycling, swimming) at
least five times a week.
- Manage stress: Chronic stress raises blood pressure. Try deep breathing, meditation,
or spending time in nature.
- Stay hydrated: Water helps regulate blood pressure. Try starting your morning with a
glass of warm water with lemon.
- Improve sleep quality: Poor sleep is linked to hypertension. Aim for 7-9 hours per night
and avoid screens before bed.
First Aid for Hypertensive Crisis
If your blood pressure spikes above 180/120 mmHg and you experience chest pain,
severe headache, or difficulty breathing, seek emergency help immediately. In the
meantime:
- Sit down and take slow, deep breaths to relax your nervous system.
- Drink a glass of beetroot or hibiscus tea to help lower BP naturally.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and salty foods during a crisis.
Hypertension is manageable, and small changes make a big difference!
