Blood glucose self tests for diabetics not on insulin hasn˙t been really been well
documented to be helpful in management in general, since having no insulin the patient
isn˙t able to do something about a too high blood glucose level.
But, knowing that one˙s blood glucose in general, measured sporadically once a month,
if off more often, fasting (> 126 mg/dL, 7 mmol/L) and 2 hours after the largest meal
200 mg/dL, 10 mmol/L) are always too high when discussed with the doc treating
the diabetes can help the doc to better adjust the oral meds.
All patients on insulin should at least twice weekly measure their fasting blood glucose,
and the 2 hour post meal values, those who inject fast acting insulin during meals would
do well to frequently test their pre-meal blood glucose levels.
This using the usual blood glucose test strips is quite bothersome, and painful, thus we
would recommend the use of continuous glucose monitors, the sensors for which can be
left in place for two weeks, and read using an app on a smartphone, thus checking one˙s
glucose level before each meals (used to adjust the dose of short acting insulin also
according to what one is going to eat) can be easily done, while from time to time check
the 2 hours post meal glucose levels too.
