Recently I've been put on a calcium blocker to try and reduce my high blood pressure. While I feel better, I'm extremely tired.

Does anyone have experience with these medications that have found something that works for them with minimal side effects?

I'm glad you asked this question because it made me do a Google search for calcium
blockers. It turns out that my wife has been giving me daily doses of calcium with my
dinner meal. Maybe not such a good idea?

Google says about calcium blockers, "They work by preventing calcium from entering
heart and artery cells, which relaxes blood vessels and lowers blood pressure."

The pill I take is Amlodipine and it DID help lower my blood pressure significantly. Now
I guess I have to wait and see the results when I stop taking calcium :) Prior to
Amlodipine, I was taking Diltiazem, but I don't recall why the Doctor switched meds on
me. Probably because my blood pressure was still too high.

Did Google say where the calcium goes if not to the heart? I ask because I had one of the free heart scans to get ones calcium score and mine was 107, just +7 over the threshold of being "at risk" for heart disease. What was interesting was there was calcium build up in my kidneys. I had kidney failure over 13 years ago, maybe more, it was acute and as a result of dehydration, however I wonder now if Calcium did not have a role in that as well.

I'd love to learn your results. I read somewhere that Cholesterol is what our brain is made of? And that Cholesterol lowering medication is a leading cause of dementia. I believe it was the same article that stated calcium was the real culprit we needed to cut back on with age and not to focus on cholesterol medication .. I don't know how true it is. However, if I don't post in a year, you know it was a bs article and I fell for it, as I am off my statin medication -- makes my joints ache really bad when on it. I adjusted my diet and was able to stay off them, for now.

The last time I was on a blood pressure med, it was also Amlodipine, as the Metopolol (sp) did not work well for me, it made me too tired and too drastically reduce my blood pressure. However if I recall I had to double my dosage of Amlodipine the last go around. I'll have to see what my cardiovascular doctor says this Thursday. Hopefully it can be maintained on half the previous dosage.
