Exercises that are new.
The body adapts to exercises that you do on a regular basis. This means that if all you
do is back squat, eventually back squatting will become quite stale, and won˙t really give
you a stimulus. If you squat a lot˙squatting won˙t make you sore any more.
But, if you all of a sudden modify the movement, or change it entirely, you˙ll start
making progress again.
Is this twice as effective?
No.
It˙s infinitely more effective, because the difference between zero progress and any
progress is a divide by zero equation.
That˙s what you have to gain by varying your exercises in an intelligent way.
Now, is this necessary in all cases?
Nope.
Some people do the same exact exercises for decades and still improve.
But for those without iron joints, you may wish to vary your exercise selection a bit.
This will help you get a new stimulus, avoid injury and keep your training fresh.
