I was thinking what I'd do with my office if I won the lottery.

    1. Replace my laptop Proxmox server with a tower case system with
    external drive bays.

    2. Replace my Synology SATA HDs with SSDs and add capacity.

    3. Run 2 CAT6 cables to my storage area and relocate the server and
Synology there - they're loud and make a lot of fan noise!

    4. Get AT&T fiber and back up my NAS to the cloud.

Alas, it wouldn't be mind-bendingly better, but it would be nice...

Why not get a half rack, and a 1u or 2u Dell PowerEdge R620 or a couple of them, load it/them with disks and put proxmox on it/them? You don't need to win the lottery for those either really... eBay! =)

    2. Replace my Synology SATA HDs with SSDs and add capacity.

    Good shout!

    3. Run 2 CAT6 cables to my storage area and relocate the server and Synology there - they're loud and make a lot of fan noise!

    Another good idea!

    4. Get AT&T fiber and back up my NAS to the cloud.

Ah yes deffo get fibre, 1Gbps or better, and yes a cloud backup would be great, just be careful who you back up too, they may use your data and sell it on to other companies!

Alas, it wouldn't be mind-bendingly better, but it would be nice...

I dunno, you could definitely make it vastly improved. You're on the right track.

Space. I want to move my homelab into my storage space, which is a bit
cramped. I'd most likely end up with a tower case standing in a shelf
with the Synology next to it. Noise is an issue, too - If I increase my
compute, I'll need to move it out of my office.

    2. Replace my Synology SATA HDs with SSDs and add capacity.

That might resolve the clunking/spinning noise currently a problem when
I'm on calls without doing anything. Shame prices have gone through the
    roof for storage.

Synology has an enterprise backup tool that backs up to most cloud
storage - and their own storage as well. I've been tempted by that.
