Apple has announced a new MacBook Pro laptop featuring the latest M5 chip, with a launch scheduled for October 22. Only a 14-inch version has been confirmed at this time, with prices starting at $1,599 / 1,599 / AU$2,499. If you're interested in upgrading to Apple's latest portable productivity powerhouse, then I've gathered up where you can place a MacBook Pro M5 preorder right now.

Preorder the MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5) at Apple

Our guide to everything you need to know about the MacBook Pro M5 covers the specs, design, M5 chip and various configurations in more detail, but I can provide a quick overview here.

Essentially, the M5 chip offers the biggest improvement compared to older models, with Apple boasting 3.5x faster AI performance than the M4 chip, and up to 6x faster performance than the M1. In terms of more general use, there is still a step up in performance and an improved SSD, though it's relatively minor if you're coming from an M4-powered device.

Elsewhere, the design remains identical to the last-generation model, as does the pricing, so it makes sense to go for the latest MacBook Pro M5 if you're in the market for a new Apple laptop. Amazon (US): pre-orders live now from $1,999
Amazon has one version of the new 14-inch MacBook Pro and one version of the 16-inch MacBook Pro available to preorder. Both are the base models with the M2 Pro chip, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. Order now in time for release day
on 24 January.

Best Buy: pre-order all models from $1,999
Best Buy has a wide selection of MacBook Pro models listed and available to order right now. You can choose between devices with the M2 Pro or M2 Max chip, as well as memory of up to 32GB and storage of up to 1TB. Prices range from $1,999 to $3,499. Pre-orders from Best Buy also get four months Apple Music, three months iCloud Plus and three months Apple TV Plus for free.

Apple: pre-order from $1,999 / 2,149 / AU$3,199
Naturally, the official Apple Store is the first to take pre-orders for the new MacBook Pro models featuring the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. Keep an eye out for any potential trade-in options if you have an old device you're willing
to part with as Apple tends to offer the most money in return. It's a good
way to get the best saving ahead of launch.

Amazon (UK): pre-orders open for all models from 2,149
You can now order the latest MacBook Pro with M2 Pro or M2 Max chip from Amazon UK with prices starting at 2,149. Both the 14-inch and 16-inch models are available, with options to customise the storage between a 512GB SSD or 1TBGB SSD.

Currys: get the new MacBook Pro from 1,349
Currys is another UK retailer that's taking pre-orders for the new MacBook
Pro M2. All versions are listed and if you order now then the laptop will arrive in time for release on June 24. You can also trade in your old working laptop to save on the price. We already think that the MacBook Pro is one of the best laptops you can buy, so this latest M5-powered version will almost certainly remain a top pick for demanding productivity tasks, including creative work, coding, engineering, and more.

If you're on an older Intel-based MacBook, you will see the biggest improvements in terms of power and performance, and so an upgrade to the M5 Pro is likely the best option for you. Anyone on the MacBook Air or an older M-powered Pro looking for a step up will also find this a good option to consider, although only if you really need the considerable performance boost or must have the latest tech.

As for whether there's an urgent need to pre-order the device due to the risk of a sell-out, I think this is very unlikely. Some of the more popular Apple products have sold out in the past during the launch window, but I don't
think there's a huge chance of this happening with the MacBook Pro M5, so you could hold off until Black Friday or we spot a very compelling trade-in offer at the likes of Best Buy.
