At least, it is according to a 2026 study by web hosting provider 20i that found that 76% of web design professionals see AI as the primary threat to their business, outranking shrinking budgets and rising overheads. The study gathered web design professionals' thoughts on how AI is impacting the web design space. The overarching theme is one of concern, both around AI replacing web designers and the quality of work that AI platforms produce.

But dig a little deeper, and youll find it is a little more nuanced than AI
is stealing jobs. There is a clear shift in where web developers bring the most value. For those willing to adapt, this new era could be one of great opportunity. Is web design under threat? (Image credit: 20i) The study targeted 500 website design professionals from across the US. Some statistics paint a concerning picture: 75% of web designers report that AI-driven competition has already hit their business in the past year. 76% rank rising AI use as their top future concern, outranking the cost of tools (45.6%) and shrinking client budgets (34.8%). 3-in-4 say finding new clients has become more difficult in the past year, marking an increasingly competitive market. 89% of designers say clients underestimate the true cost of web design, a gap fueled by AI tools promising instant websites and unrealistic timelines. (Image credit: 20i) AI is a common concern, offering potential clients a faster and cheaper route to building and launching a website. Yet, it is also clear that some clients fail to see the value of web design backed by years
of experience. Are you a pro? Subscribe to our newsletter Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed! Some industry leaders believe that designers who embrace AI technology, whilst pairing it with their expertise, can gain a competitive edge in this now rapidly evolving industry. Harry Roper, CEO and Founder of web design agency Imaginary Space, explains how developers are using AI to gain an advantage:

We're seeing applications that can generate fully-built websites in seconds, and this has a ton of benefits across different customer levels and
verticals. It allows you to create custom pages for people in a matter of seconds, helping to deliver a more unique experience for each customer while also enabling companies to attack marketing at a much faster pace. He explains, As costs come down, this will become a by-product of marketing rather than something that requires heavy upfront investment.

He goes on to highlight how website developers who take a proactive approach to AI adoption can get ahead of the game. "Right now, there's still a small but necessary amount of technical knowledge needed to properly utilize this technology, which can make it daunting and hard to approach. But with good practices developed over the last 60 years of technology, we now have frameworks and methodologies that we can run our
teams and ourselves through to build something with AI that has real impact.

He paints a more positive picture of the future of website design:

"The question isn't whether you're going to lose your job to AI - it's about how your role is going to need to adapt to fit this new technology. Much like when the steam engine was introduced to the world, entire industries were destroyed overnight, while new ones were created alongside them." What the results really tell us In reality, the survey results paint a picture of an evolving web design landscape that presents both risks and opportunities for designers.

"These results show how AI is reshaping web design in the U.S., and how designers now need to think more carefully about where their value really sits. Mentions Michael Butler, Head of Design at 20i , AI vibe design tools are making it easier to get started, which inevitably increases competition, especially at the cheaper end of the market. At the same time, when used properly, these tools can optimize workflows and increase output for users of all levels.

He goes on to explain how AI isnt a threat to designers who learn to leverage it to their advantage.

"The edge belongs to designers who use AI to strengthen their work rather
than replace it. Adding that, Technical ability and strategic judgement still matter, and if anything, are more important now than ever. When technical skill and a creative mind are combined with the efficiency AI brings, the result is far more valuable than anything an automated tool can produce on
its own." The future of AI in web design: Summary There is no hiding from the fact that AI has, and will continue to, shake up website design. Thanks to an explosion in AI website builders , making it ridiculously easy for anyone to build and launch a website with little to no design experience or expertise, no longer can designers sell their services purely based on technical know-how.

Instead, designers should shift focus, relying on AI tools to streamline the design process, whilst pitching expertise in creating seamless human experiences as a major Unique Selling Point (USP).
