Being in the UK rather than the US can put you at a serious disadvantage when it comes to Connections.

Yellow and green were fairly straightforward today although I did initially fall into the trap of wanting to put SPAM, TROLL and PHISH together in the same group. Blue and Purple baffled me, having no concept whatsoever of
STARRY or SQUIRT sodas. Starry is a relative newcomer, but I was surprised to learn that Squirt has been around since 1938, a plucky grapefruit-flavored underdog that has survived the competition and carbonated innovation of big soda.

Over here we are still mourning the passing of Lilt, which has been rebranded as the far less exotic Fanta Pineapple & Grapefruit. Although having said that, the history of Fanta (Nazi Germanys wartime alternative to Coca-Cola)
is a worthy Wikipedia rabbit hole. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Thursday, 12 December, game #550) YELLOW: THINGS THAT SOUND LIKE "T" TEA,

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green
is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as
you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there
are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

This was a rare day where I landed on the Purple group first. Its easy to overlook homophones, but I sometimes get these groups by reading the grid out loud in the dullest voice I can muster obviously not something you can do if youre having a sneaky game of Connections in the office. Unless, of course, you want to confuse your co-workers.

It also helps if youre not great at spelling and thought whine was spelt WINE and wail was spelt WHALE. Thats not me of course, my spelling and grammar is exceptional. Thats why, a-hem, I got TYPES OF SENTENCES last I was saving
it, one in the bank. Or was I? (QUESTION) Hell no! My first thought when I saw PHOENIX and IRONS in the grid was the actors
River and Jeremy. I spent ages trying to think of any films they were in together (I later discovered there are none, but they were both in the Shakespearean TV drama The Hollow Crown ). I then convinced myself that they must be connected to Denzil WASHINGTON and Kevin BACON and got the dreaded
one away.

After connecting the breakfast items I found the correct group for BACON and the rest clicked into place.

The blue group completely threw me. Although it's true that THEY HAVE A HORN, the type that AFRICA has is very different to the one youd find in a CAR.
Such is the random beauty of Connections.
